ELMER DE HAAS
photographer, director and artist
Elmer started his career directing tv commercials for Hewlett Packard, Coca Cola and Samsung but his sense of imagery naturally lead to photography becoming equally important on his professional path.
His steadily growing photographic œuvre is often characterized as “work that embodies great emotional depth, with a sensitive eye for composition and storytelling”. He translates voyeurism into sensitivity and does not seek, he
finds his motives. An instant, a moment in time, beauty or dignity. He tells what speaks to him, the blue hour of a
human being, fate, a place.
my preferred spot for a morning coffee
DE KOFFIE SALON
1017 VT Amsterdam
Perfect coffee, nice ambiance, very local. Coffees to take out or to enjoy inside. A big plus... they do not allow you to work on your laptop. It is a place to drink coffee and enjoy your company.
my favourite cultural institution
1071 DJ Amsterdam
For photography I go to FOAM at the Keizersgracht.
Also worth a visit is the filmmuseum EYE at the IJ.
here’s where I buy my books
P.C. Hooftstraat 44
1071 BZ Amsterdam
They have a fantastic collection of signed photography books; just take the stairs down one level. They also have an interesting collection of signed photographs, (in case you want to spend some money).
additional local shops I support
1017 VT Amsterdam
This concept store sells stuff you do not really need in your day to day life, but which is nice to give as presents.
1015 BZ Amsterdam
A nice and tiny shop in the heart of the Jordaan with a very friendly owner. Sells custom made jewellery for men and women, clothes (for women) and a wide range of other things, from candles to lamps to towels.
this is where I go for a simple dinner with friends
Famous for their spareribs. Loud and noisy ambiance, but super good food and service! If you like meat. They have four restaurants by now; my favourites are The Handboogstraat (Handboogstraat 17) or the Lange Niezel (Lange Niezel 1) locations.
If you like a steak, Loetje is the place. A no-nonsense restaurant Amsterdam style. I prefer the “old” one at Johannes Vermeerstraat 52. This is where it all started. During summer and joining people with a boat I can also recommend LOETJE AAN 'T IJ (Werfkade 14, 1033 RA Amsterdam).
CAFE RESTAURANT AMSTERDAM
1051 PA Amsterdam
Located in a gorgeous restored pump house this is another very fine place to go. I recommend the Dutch shrimps as a starter and a steak tartare as main course. Really a great location with fantastic food. It's also close the WESTERGASFABRIEKS TERREIN, a place where festivals and fairs are being held and where you can find some nice bars.
here I dine when there’s something to celebrate
When in the company of fish lovers I like to go to LUCIUS (Spuistraat 247,
1012 VP Amsterdam). The sole is my favorite dish. Great food, reservations necessary.
When in company of Japanese food lovers the traditional Bento lunchbox at the YAMAZATO RESTURANT in the Okura Hotel (Ferdinand Bolstraat 333, 1072 LH Amsterdam) is such a treat. A traditional Japanese restaurant, fantastic food and service and a serious saké wine list.
If you are a fan of teppanyaki kitchen, have dinner at the SAZANKA RESTURANT, also located within the Okura hotel.
my bars of choice
an additional thing not to be missed
